The Hungarian State Circus can be found in Városliget, between Zoo and Fun Fair.
The Városliget is visited for 100 years to spend free time in the Ice-ring, in the Széchenyi Spa, in Gundel Restaurant, in the Transportation Museum or in the Capital Circus.
The Circus building, which is the only stone circus in Central Europe (1850 seats), is not affected by the weather , so it is opened around the year for the audience.
On 27th June in 1889 the Holland-German circus director, Ede Wulff opened the wave-tin circus building on iron frames, which he built with a metropolis show. This building would be the latter Hungarian State Circus in the place of the Zoo. The sizes of this building were the same like the present day Circus, the only difference was the seating of the room, it seated 2290 before.
In that time Városliget was on the top its importance. It was the biggest park of the young and nice capital city, the famous Hungarians sent also fain their time there. In 1895 gave Ede Wulff the right of renting to Zoo's head, which was not the best decided...
The Primebudacastle opened in 1896 in the Zoo, too, get lot of famous artists perform and took away the audience from the City Circus. The new wake up arrived in 1904, when Matvej Ivanovics Beketow (Matthew Beketow) rented the Circus and renewed the building at own cost full, than opened it on 30th April in 1904 with such gorgeous show, which has never seen before. From then till 1934 its name was Beketow Circus. In 1908 he "pushed" the Circus in the distance 80 m toward the English Park. In the '20's Sándor Könyöt as joint owner are presented in the Circus' life.
In 1935 the city invited tenders for renting the circus, which was won by György Fényes entrepreneur in Városliget. He organised not so classical performance in July 1936 at first. The show was such spectacle , which dazzled the audience with precise organisation, directing, with the sight of shining, renewed building.. For this Fényes City Circus employed plenty of excellent and world famous artists, for example Gábor Eötvös music clown who was honoured with Jászai-prize and laureate of Hungarian Republic and Charlie Chaplin also acknowledged him.
1943 was the last Fényes- year because in 1944 the capital city denied the show permission due to the stronger tendency of bombardment. Again was finished an era in the Circus.
The Hungarian State Circus started to work in 1945 again. In 1950 State Artist Institute is founded. On the summer of 1955 the audience could get know the new, graduated artists. The significant date of the Hungarian circus art's history was 1954, when National circus Firm was founded, the latter Hungarian Circus and Varieté Firm that is Hungarian Circus and Varieté Ltd., whose part is the Hungarian State Circus. In 50's the Circus was not avoided by socialization either, than the in the next decade came calmer period. On 15th March in 1966 the newspaper, Népszava reported about decoupling of the old circus building, and after couple of days the time-worn stone circus building in Hungary, this witness of old times disappeared from Városliget. On 14th January 1971 the Capital State Circus of Budapest was opened with big gala show. Its director was the only woman director in the Circus, who was the Picard-dynasties' sprout.
At present István Kristóf is the Capital State Circus of Budapest, who was the next after Tamás Radnóti director.
The circus building, which was very modern 35 years ago, showed 125 Hungarian and foreign programmes, on 15500 performances with 25 Million people. Nowadays the building claims to renew, which can keep step with the claim of the XXI. century, in that hope, that our dreams come true in the following years.
